Baby food and Sneakers

It would be easy to get by in central Malaga with very few words of Spanish. In the historic centre, Plaza de la Merced and along the marina, most visitors will be able to negotiate menus and ask for the bill. But if you are planning to live away from the city centre, like us, then some grasp of the language whilst not essential, is definitely an advantage.

As mentioned in an earlier post, we have been learning the language at our own pace, chiefly through Duolingo. This week we have been putting some of it to the test as we tried to find our way around joining a local gym, made purchases from an electrical store and sought out certain grocery items in the supermercado.

Paul managed to pull out some of the right words and questions in the electrical superstore and came out with a monitor screen compatible with his laptop for work. The assistant understood English well enough, but found explaining in English more difficult.

I must say, I find understanding Spanish very hard. Even when I ask for something to be repeated slower. The trainer in the gym spoke no English, but was so animated and expressive that I was left in no doubt her Spinning Classes would be a right beasting! The receptionist happily talked us through the costs to join and we’re hoping to sign up next week. She told us we needed to bring towels and sneakers!!

Buying porridge oats yesterday was probably laughable to an onlooker. The lady I asked was more than helpful. Looking at pictures on my iPhone, leading me to a soup aisle at one point and interpreting the Google translation – “papilla” as baby food! What I needed was Copos de Avena it turns out. Bought one packet which should easily last the three months here.

Copos de Avena

So practice is going to be key and some proper lessons whilst we are here!

Enjoy your copos de avena. We definitely need them here. Hope you remembered to pack your sneakers!
